What is an LPC?

An LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a mental health professional who has had extensive clinical training and can accept health insurance.

In order to obtain a license, an LPC must complete the following requirements:

    • An LPC has either a Master’s Degree or a Doctorate in counseling from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. They must complete a minimum of sixty graduate semester hours in a planned educational program.
    • In order to become licensed, they must also have at least three years of supervised full-time counseling experience in a professional counseling setting acceptable to the committee, one year of which may be obtained prior to the granting of the master’s degree.
    • They must pass the National Counselor Examination of the National Board for Certified Counselors
    • Once licensed, LPC’s must complete a minimum number of continuing education credits each year in order to stay up to date on current methods and research.
